READ THIS FIRST: I'm posting the guide for combine newbies tomorrow. Warning: Language; unnecessarily long; probably blows to look at on mobile; if you read the whole thing you’re dumb; just look for bold that interests you. With the combine moving to primetime this year and the Redskins literally holding the keys to the draft kingdom with the second overall pick in the 2020 draft, I thought it would be a good idea to make a post discussing why the combine matters and how to understand what you’re actually watching. I’ve also seen a lot of articles and tweets coming out of both national and local sports media downplaying the importance of athletic testing and measurables recently and I want to set the record straight. > ‘Does the combine really matter this year though? > We’re taking Chase Young then only have one more pick before Day 3 of the draft. ’ Chase Young seems like a lock for our first round pick, and rightfully so, but the Redskins are going to make a lot of moves this off-season and guys like Trent, Dunbar, etc., are very much in play to be offloaded for picks. If that happens, you’ll be glad you paid attention during the combine to those Day 2 OTs, CBs, and WRs who were unlikely to fall all the way to the Redskins next pick in the third round. This post will therefore be split into two parts. Part 1: The roster. I am going to highlight how I believe a team should be built in theory, how that applies to the Redskins roster, and then include my thoughts on key variables like Trent Williams, Chase Young, Free Agents, etc., while avoiding a rabbit hole plunge into the overall cap. Part 2: The combine. We will go into detail on what drills and measurables matter per position group and how to see the complete picture of a prospect using athletic testing as a baseline for success. If you want to avoid my opinions on some players and the team and just want combine info look for Part 2 tomorrow. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ > About me and my bs and my sources: I’ve been following draft and scouting media since 2016 and it’s served me well as the team has sucked ever since. If the NFL Combine and FA period are the playoffs then the NFL Draft is the Super Bowl. From the rise and fall of RG3 and the draft doldrums that followed, to Kirk and his tags, to the failed Alex Smith experiment, and finally the joke that was the 2019 season it has been a rough ride of late for us fans. Enter Ron Rivera. We’ve discussed the hire enough around here, we’ve seen enough to know that changes are coming, so all that I really want to highlight is that the 2020 free agency period and draft is where Ron will need to lay the foundation for this team’s future and fortunately for him he is in the perfect position to do so holding the number 2 overall pick in the draft. Everything that follows from me is basically an amalgamation of the work and opinions of the following studs meshed with my own. The Draft Network guys – Jon Ledyard, Ben Solak, Trevor Sikkema via Locked On NFL Draft podcast. Daniel Jeremiah (and Bucky Brooks by default) w Move the Sticks podcast – DJ always talks about how he does his big boards with his eyes and mock drafts with his ears. His big board’s get away from the echo chamber and I appreciate that given how mainstream he has become. Brett Kollman – DJ lite but with YouTube content. PFF podcast and EDGE – they catch a lot of shit for presenting their information poorly but their product is here to stay and for good reason. Voch Lombardi as it relates to OL and DL via YouTube. Josh Norris w Rotoworld / FantasyPros podcasts - they’re better for fantasy football stuff but I appreciate their analytical approaches (Pro-tip: if you’re getting your fantasy news from fantasy podcasts you’re already behind the curve. If you want to dominate your league get into college scouting. 100% dynasty exposure to guys like Chris Godwin and AJ Brown will do you wonders). Redskins Talk podcast for Redskins news but don’t listen to them regarding the draft. They just parrot mainstream guys like McShay. I hope JP keeps up the ‘anti-ashburning yourself’ bit though. My go to for Redskins reactions and news. John Keim Report podcast for Redskins news and nice insider scoops. His Ohio State connections have served him well. Keim’s most recent podcast with Agent J. I. Halsell is a must listen. Stop reading this and go listen to that. Subscribe to r/NFL_Draft Will update with others. All of the above podcasts are available via Spotify. Must listen/watch before the draft/season Daniel Jeremiahs 2020 NFL Draft conference call w the media If you want to learn how to better watch the game of football I highly recommend the Coaches Film Room videos on YouTube for the college national championship games. 6 HC’s from different collegiate programs watch the game together live and commentate what they’re looking at. Probably the single most valuable piece of football content I’ve ever digested. 2017-2018 Semi - #3 Georgia vs #2 Oklahoma – the 2OT boat race game where Michel/Chubb and Mark Andrews dominate 2017-2018 Semi Bowl - #4 Alabama vs #3 Georgia – the game Tu’a came off the bench - they literally can’t stop talking about Da’Ron Payne during this game - if you only watch one watch this one 2015-2016 Natty - #1 Alabama vs #2 Clemson – Includes Jon Allen, Reuben Foster, Da’Ron Payne, Ross Piersch, SDH ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Part 1: How we transcend being Redskins and take on our final form as Ronskins General themes of team building Daniel Jeremiah said on his most recent podcast that the NFL is something like a decade away from position-less football. Just athletes on the field, everywhere, all the time. I’m not sure the league is there yet but I’m on board with his overall team building design contrived from that idea. Prioritization of the build: OL – An OL with depth and solidarity - gives you a floor to compete in your division even w/ subpar QB play. Jason Kelce alone was probably the MVP of the Foles SB run. This doesn’t mean you have to have four 1st round picks like the Cowboys or that you must spend top of the market money on your RG but you MUST have solidarity. (a) Rotation of edge rushers w/ at least one blue chip player – affecting the QB is priority number 1 for a defense but you only have 2 seconds to consistently do it as an edge rusher. That means, and I cannot stress this enough, I do not care how productive an edge is in college or how mean they are on the field if they don’t have elite get off/explosiveness AND a combination of highly developed technique/hand fighting and bend. The increased level of competition edge rushers face when transitioning from college to the NFL cannot be understated (and vice versa for OL). (b) Secondary w/ at least one blue chip corner and an intelligent free safety– the 2020 WR class may end up competing with the 2014 classes top end talent plus the class is deeper with talent overall. The Pats have embraced this mold of late to combat a pass happy league. The Ravens lost half their front seven last year but stay adding secondary. The league may have devalued FS contracts but that doesn’t mean a true single high FS isn’t insanely valuable to your defensive scheme. Speed everywhere else - with more and more Kittles, Kelces, Kamaras, and McCafferys coming into the league speed across the board is essential. Once you have all of those pieces in place then you draft your QB and skill position players > But we already drafted a QB? Does that mean we’re screwed? No we’re not totally screwed even with the Alex Smith dead cap but regardless of whether Dwayne develops or not the people who didn’t want to spend quality picks on a QB in last year's draft should feel justified! The roster was not developed properly for his arrival and Jay evidently was not in a position to negotiate a contract extension and start Dwayne right away, instead he gambled on Keenum and lost. I’d argue that had Kyle Smith [or whoever] not been a GOAT evaluator and failed to draft Terry McLaurin that Dwayne would have shown so poorly under Callahan that we’d actually be giving Tu’a a long, hard look. I believe Dwayne is our guy, not saying that he isn’t, but we threw him to the fucking wolves in such a way that no fan, coach, or FO should respect. Joe Burrow probably isn’t thrilled about going to Cincy but at least they will commit to him 100% from day one. > Moving forward though, what does that mean for Dwayne and the Ronskins? Assuming Haskins is the guy and we draft Chase Young for the moment - our first real window with Haskins, McLaurin, Sweat, Young, and projecting new LT/RT’s all on rookie contracts begins in 2021 and ends 2023. That basically gives us this off-season and next to develop the core of the roster we want to make our run with. That doesn’t mean the window closes after the 2023 season but after that you have to pivot in your team building philosophy because you’re either paying Haskins as ‘he is the guy’ or you end up in this nasty limbo with no leverage like the Cowboys because you haven’t developed a backup plan at the most important position in football [more on that later]. Keep in mind, we’re already looking at tough decisions with Scherff, Allen, and Payne considering McLaurin, Sweat, and Young’s contracts are coming around the same time as Haskins so there’s really no room for stop-gap players at unimportant positions or high priced FA’s in the meantime. > Change your mindset: Firing Bruce and hiring Ron immediately changed our team building philosophy from bandaids and bubble gum to some end game shit. Start thinking about this draft and FA period like we’re picking in the top 6-12 range in 2020 but 2021 and beyond we’re cooking. An incoming free agent’s age and their play two to three years from now matter more than their stat lines during the 2020 season. So how do we build around Haskins.. > Modifying DJ’s outline and how it fits the Ronskins right now 2(a) – The Good – Rotation of edge rushers are set thank goodness, maybe even elite, with Sweat and Young both locked up the next four years and Allen, Ioannidis, and Payne on the interior. 1 – The Bad – OL can be rehauled by 2021/2022 if you extend Scherff and possibly Roullier, make a decision on Flowers at LG, develop Martin and Piersch further, then bring back Trent only long enough to draft an heir apparent LT and RT in the next two years while keeping Dwayne on his feet and in development mode. Moses plays for us in 2020 most likely but you give an early Day 3 OT and Geron Christian the chance to beat him out in preseason. If you trade off of 2 overall this process is accelerated significantly. Using Trent as a bridge is fine, my preferred method even, but if you trade him and get back a 2nd rounder+ then I’d think we would be staring down his immediate successor with that pick in someone like Josh Jones or Austin Jackson. Dwayne needs solidarity to develop and that’s priority number one over saving a few million in cap space. 2(b) – The Ugly – Secondary is a straight up mess. We have no choice but to look to FA here but we need to do it in such a way that we don’t end up with another Josh Norman situation on our hands. Bradberry (26) and Byron Jones (27) seem like good options but they will be pretty long in the tooth as our playoff window actually opens [more on them below]. Last season was an anomaly for Dunbar, he can’t stay healthy, thinks he’s an elite corner, and was one of Jay’s guys so I think he’s traded soon. He will hold out all season if we bring in FA’s making two and three times his 3. 7mil in 2020. It’s Trent all over again except Dunbar isn’t talented enough to be worth the headache. Extend him, sure, or trade him asap if he’s not playing ball. Put Moreau outside full time. Put Jimmy in the slot. Draft a corner with the pick from trading Dunbar if possible, it’s a deep class this year after all, then add someone in FA whose either young enough to be worth signing for four years (I like Fuller but he’s a slot corner; Byron Jones is likely in the 12-14mil AAV range) or go cheap on someone like Bree for two years who won’t break the bank but will be serviceable until you can draft a stud if necessary. > Obligatory Fuck Bruce Allen incoming and why our third down defense blows! FWIW I think Bruce and Jay’s incompetence is supremely highlighted when looking at our current secondary situation. We signed Norman and Collins to disgusting contracts when we were nowhere near competing and the draft capital invested at one of the most important positions in football over the last half decade has been laughable. Even my dogs know this is a passing league but Bruce is over here trying to piece together a secondary by paying box safety’s and starting UDFA’s and a one dimensional zone corner who ran a 4. 66 in his prime - sorry Josh. 2016 2017 2018 2019 2nd Su’a Cravens 3rd Fabian Moreau 4th Troy Apke 7th Jimmy Moreland 3rd Kendall Fuller 4th Montate Nicholson 7th Greg Stroman N/A N/A 7th Joshua Holsey N/A N/A That’s one 2nd, two 3rds, two 4ths, and three 7ths in four years of drafting where all three safety selections completely busted (Cravens 2nd, Apke 4th, Nicholson 4th) while backing up the Brinks trucks for Josh Norman and Landon Collins, trading Kendall Fuller on a whim, and then passing on Derwin James. That alone should get you fired as a GM. Please, Kyle Smith, find us a true FS. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ > The Dwayne succession plan and why we should consider drafting a guy Rivera likes soonish Generally speaking, drafting another QB before the end of Day 2 of the draft would ideally happen every 4 years. Before you dismiss that notion reflect on how if we made that move previously while Kirk was approaching his tags the Alex Smith trade never happens. Kirk is the perfect embodiment of why that idea theoretically makes sense even. I wouldn’t draft a QB this year given our limited draft capital, a stop gap cheap FA on a one to two year contract will do, but it’s something to think about in the 2021/2022 drafts as that buys you time to evaluate Dwayne and we aren’t really expecting to win next year anyways, right? If you need further proof note: the value in solid backups for playoff caliber teams [Eagles and Foles] the fact that it is really hard to fuck up the value of a highly drafted QB [Jimmy G is drafted 62nd overall in 2014 - basically rented as TB insurance for three seasons before being flipped for a 2018 second; the morons in ARI tanked Rosen’s value as hard as they could trading him a full 24 hours after drafting Kyler and they still flipped him for a late 2019 second at 62 overall and a 2020 fifth] the value in having either a young backup with developmental potential (Kirk Cousins; Gardner Minshew) or signing a cheap but experienced vet (Tyrod; Foles) who can be your saving grace when an Alex Smith goes down or a Philip Rivers starts shooting blanks Charlie Casserly is constantly cited on Redskins Talk for suggesting you should draft a QB every year but that’s just hyperbole talking. *Casserly is also a bit of a quack as it relates to his draft takes. * Regardless, you should always be confident in your backup QB if you expect to contend and you should always be looking towards a QB succession plan. Even if Haskins is a borderline top-5/10 guy at the end of his rookie contract you still need to draft his backup one to two years before his contract ends to maintain leverage, have a backup plan if contract negotiations go south, and just have a young backup QB on the roster. Otherwise you’re in jeopardy of building a good roster around a young QB while setting yourself up for cap purgatory. The fastest way to do that right now is playing out before our eyes as our division opponent just paid Zeke before the end of his rookie contract and are about to pay a mid-level QB top-5 money because what else are they going to do. Good thing McCarthy is a proven HC that never had to crutch an elite QB to make up for his vanilla play-calling. If we know by the end of year 2 or 3 that Haskins isn’t the guy then you evaluate the roster and decide whether you have all the pieces necessary to facilitate another rookie or you build the roster until that day comes. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Players and FA’s > Dwayne Haskins Despite the train wreck that was the 2019 season I thought Dwayne showed as well as he could have by the end all things considered. If I can find it I will link it here but Keim did a podcast months ago where he talked to a few different Ohio State affiliates including Ryan Day about Haskins and I believe it was Ryan that went into detail about the Haskins v Burrow v Martell QB competition. He explained he wasn’t surprised to see Dwayne’s season with the Redskins unfold the way it did given the situation, he almost expected a slow start under good circumstances, and that he has full faith in Dwayne’s ability to excel at the NFL once he gets command of the speed of the game, the playbook, and the Skins offensive scheme. He was confident in that opinion because during his time at OSU, Haskins took longer to pick up the playbook than Burrow did but once Haskins grew comfortable he shut the door on the QB competition with ease. Dwayne has all the attributes you look for in a QB and he’s unfairly criticized constantly but his success or failure as a franchise QB is entirely within his control. He has the tools so hopefully he and Rivera come together in a way that he and Jay never did. I want 16-32 more starts before we even consider another direction at QB. > Trent Williams Trigger warning: When Trent held out I thought he was right to do so. I know a lot of you believe that players should be held to the terms of their contracts but you’re not seeing the entire picture. These dudes are putting their long term health on the line every Sunday and I don’t blame them for wanting to be compensated relative to their peers based on their performance. Teams have no issues asking players to take pay cuts towards the end of their contracts so why some people get all in a fuss when guys like Trent, who have one more pay day left in the tank, decide to properly manage the risk of being an NFL athlete is beyond me. Straight up. On the other hand, I believe that Trent’s holdout however had jack shit to do with his medicals. I don’t doubt for one second he had a legitimate, even life threatening, health issue. If you told me his medicals would have kept him out all of last season anyways I would believe it no problem. I also believe that he would have held out even if the medical situation wasn’t present though and I 100% blame the FO for that. Trent Williams was arguably the best LT in football going into the 2019 season. So from his perspective he watched Alex Smith die, we rewarded him by drafting his theoretical replacement in Geron Christian, we drafted a rookie QB who desperately needed Trent, Brandon Scherff was/is about to get paid OT money while playing RG, all the while asking Trent to play out what could be his final season(s) as an NFL pro with no guaranteed money because Bruce Allen refuses to negotiate with terrorists aka anyone who isn’t in the final year of their contract. Fuck that. Hold out for the bag big man. Fast forward. You know by now whether he’s genuinely interested in coming back or not. Had Trent not held out last season we’d be discussing an extension with him right now regardless and even with the injury concerns you just don’t let blue chip OT walk out the door. The Eagles are about to bring Jason Peters back again and he is like 47. Offer to fully guarantee the remaining portion of his contract as an act of good faith and then work towards an extension. If that ship has sailed then shop the hell out of him at the combine and move him asap. Trent would be highly coveted even with all the baggage. > Quinton Dunbar Two steps forward one step back. Dunbar has put himself in a difficult position with his comments but they aren’t unwarranted. We’re obviously in transition but smart front offices foresee issues like missing guaranteed money on premier contracts and amend the situation (or trade the player) before a holdout ensues. Ioannidis is the success story and the Trent situation is the nightmare. Regardless, Dunbar graded out as the 2nd best DB in 2019 albeit on half the coverage snaps of most DBs in the top 10. Last year was an anomaly for Dunbar, and he knows it, but he’s been trending in the right direction for a few years now as well. Health is a regular concern. So just like I mentioned with Trent we need to solve the situation quickly by either extending him asap or trading him while he has the highest trade value of his short career. It’d be nice to pair someone like Byron Jones with Dunbar on the outside but Dunbar’s ego won’t allow him to stay in DC for <10 mil AAV while Byron lines up for 12mil+ AAV on the other side. > Ryan Kerrigan I don’t have anything bad to say about RyKer so this will be short. I want him to retire in DC but I don’t want to overpay him to do it. I see the value in keeping him around to play out his contract and mentor Sweat and Young through 2020. That’s the best pass rush rotation in the NFL. After that you can let him move on if he isn’t done playing unless he takes a home team discount. He very well may take it though given another drop in production is likely with both Sweat and Young on the roster. He’s got young kids and likes DC. It makes sense. > Greg Olsen Third leg Greg is the man and Haskins would have benefited from his knowledge of Turner/Rivera and veteran leadership but he’s approaching the end of his career and Haskins needs a TE he can grow with. We dodged a bullet given the price tag SEA slapped on him. > Austin Hooper and Hunter Henry Hooper was PFF’s 8th ranked TE in 2019 and Hooper was ranked 11th but surprisingly enough Hooper had a higher receiving grade then Henry but a lower run blocking and pass blocking grade. We can probably attribute some of that to Ryan vs Rivers but I was pleasantly surprised by Henry's blocking grades. Obviously the concern with Henry is health but I think it’s overblown given that he’s coming off a full 16 game season iirc and his previous injuries were more unlucky and unrelated than repetitive and predictable (ACL, lacerated kidney, concussion). Neither Ebron or Eifert function as in-line TEs at this point in their careers and have questionable hands and health themselves. Henry or Hooper and a TE on Day 3 would go a long way towards improving the offense if they can be had for the right price. > Cornerbacks Both the TE and DB free agent groups are deep with talent but I’d expect us to break the bank on TE over DB. They take longer to develop and it’s a much stronger corner class than TE class. > Byron Jones PFF has Byron Jones ranked as the 9th best FA available and number one corner citing his repetitive top 20 coverage grade and ability to cover TE’s. He is a stud but I’m not sure the Redskins are in a position to give a corner another 12-14 mil AAV given the state of the rest of the roster. Still, if we’re going to break the bank on someone in FA I’d give Jones a look. > James Bradberry Bradberry is someone we’ve been linked to a lot due to the familiarity with Coach and Rivera was previously quoted as saying ‘Bradberry was the type of cornerback you keep around [while in CAR]. ’ Even still, his poor run defense grades and up and down coverage grades make you wonder if we should be paying him top 10 money north of 12 mil AAV. He’s got serious length and is moderately explosive but will struggle laterally with guys like Cooper and with long speed should the Eagles draft someone like Ruggs or Raegor at 22. Logan Ryan and CHJ are too old for the Skins and CHJ plays inside so Fuller is the better option if you think you can resurrect his career and don’t think Moreland will be a full-time starter. We’re all familiar with Fuller and Bree. > Tre Boston PFF’s 13th ranked Safety in 2019 and 5th ranked FA Safety going into 2020. Had a top 5 coverage grade but was the worst ranked run defender of 86 ranked players. He’s a true FS with a nose for the football while it is in the air who turns 28 at the end of June. Probably my first choice for FS given McCourty’s age, Harris expected price tag, and Simmons sample size. Three teams in three years means he shouldn’t break the bank and his 2019 stint was with Ron in CAR. > Amari Cooper He’s a stud but the incoming WR class is incredible. It’s so deep and talent rich at the top that elite WR prospects are going to fall to the later rounds because teams would rather spend their early draft capital on top heavy position groups that lack depth. Multiple starting WRs are going to be drafted in the third and fourth rounds this year. I’d probably pass on Robby Anderson given his expected price tag for the same reason. > Chase Young and trading down He’s the apex predator of the draft world but I think a lot of people don’t understand draft leverage and the games teams play. The Redskins are going to bring in Tu’a. A report is going to come out that they like him. They need the league to stay guessing about even the slightest possibility they might draft him to drive up the value of the 2nd overall pick plus they just need to do their due diligence (no one thought we’d be in a position to draft him this time last year for example). Plugging your ears and ignoring every offer or bit of interest sent your way is something Bruce Allen would do. Even if you’re 1000000% certain you’re taking Chase Young you play every single game you can because you never know when some dumbass is going to offer you a Ricky Williams trade. You don’t trade for anything less than an RG3/Ricky Williams type haul, which is unlikely, but that doesn’t mean you don’t do everything in your power to facilitate the possibility. If MIA offers me a draft haul that includes multiple firsts and I’m positive the Lions will take Young, the Giants go OT, so I get my choice of blue chippers Okudah or Simmons at 5 plus another late first that I can trade down with and go both OT and WR in the second round I’m going to be thinking about that trade long and hard. If we should trust anyone in our FO it’s Kyle Smith. With all of that being said, you still draft Chase Young. > Draft and FA needs Primary needs: Blue chip boundary corner, OT x2 if you trade Trent and Moses sucks, TE, single high FS Secondary: Z WR, 3 down RB, LB because you can’t count on R Foster, iOL depth Tertiary: Backup QB, iDL, DE > Cap space and FA rumors The Kevin Sheehan tweet that just came out boasting about all of our cap space and sights fixed on Amari Cooper, Austin Hooper doesn’t really mesh with the interview Kyle Smith just gave yesterday at the combine [posted by /u/Norburg]. The overall tone I got from that interview was that he’s genuinely collaborating with Rivera, they’re aware of the cap position they’re in, they’re aware that they’re in the early stages of a rebuild, and they want to be as prepared as possible to take advantage of premium situations in FA as opposed to premium players. I mean obviously I can be wrong about all of this but when you’ve got Keim reporting on his podcast that Trent could want Lane Johnson money (18mil AAV) to return and Scherff is going to get paid as the number one Guard in the NFL at north of 15mil AAV then you’ve got to make concessions somewhere. What is more important? Evaluating and developing your former first round pick by keeping your young QB on his feet or drafting shiny toys at above market price? If you’re seriously considering tying up 30mil+ at two positions on OL and then trying to sign Hooper for 10mil AAV or Amari Cooper for 20mil AAV at this stage of your rebuild then you’re just dooming yourself for more cap problems in the future. ________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Look for Part 2 tomorrow to drop before the combine drills begin at 4pm. Edits: Been a while since I made a post. Had to do some ninja edits.
