But the one story he wrote that always fascinated me the most was "The Colour Out Of Space". It is a very atmospheric piece that not only keeps you on the edge of your seat, but the finish leaves you shuddering, when you realize the danger is not completely over and that each year it is spreading a little more. Because of the unusual nature of the antagonist, many considered this story to be one that nobody could film and do it justice. But I learned some time ago that a small German independent film company did try and called their version "Die Farbe" (The Color). So finding it here on Amazon got me very excited and I watched it for the first time today and I'm still blown away. I don't always like movies with a lot of subtitles, but this film had some English speakers, as well as some subtitles. But the director did not rely very heavily on dialogue but more "Showing" than "Telling" the story. It's a slow piece, yet it utilizes that pace to build tension and an atmosphere of growing isolation and danger. Some Lovecraft purists have complained that the entire story did not follow the story EXACTLY word for word, but little was left out. The film is to me a masterpiece, shot in Black and White, which also puts some people off. But it is done with a purpose and is used very effectively. There is no gore in this piece, but like Lovecraft's writing, we are given brief glimpses to tell you what's happening and then your own imagination can run wild and scare you even more. This film is brilliant in every respect. My only disappointment was that it was not longer. Still at 1 hour and 20 minutes or so, it tells a great story. It builds its tension trhough these images and sound, and allows the human cast to support them. Color out of space where to watch. Color out of space lovecraft. It's hard to make adaptations out of Lovecraft and his vivid portrayal of unspeakable and incomprehensible narrative, few manages to catch only bits and pieces and manifests them into something we can understand.
This movie struck a clear balance of what i would expect from an adaptation.
It was a surprisingly good movie, i really enjoyed it.
Nicolas Cage was made for this role, he knows how to be over the top.
I can't say much more without going to spoilers.

This is a great start of the year and I'm slapping a 10 to this movie just because the effort to make it faithful to Lovecraft. From the producers of Mandy and starring nicolas cage is starting to become my new guaranteed watch combo.

Their innocence is reflected in its intensity. When surrounded by love, they are glowing. The color palette is warm and inviting. As fear rises, they appear in shadow. The tableau turns increasingly darker as the narrative does. This is a very quiet and thoughtful experience in many ways. Nikolaj Egelund's score is sparse. Editors Janus Billeskov Jansen and Anne Østerud keep the pace measured and deliberate. The focus is on the story. Long takes without dialogue are quite effective as so much is said in the eyes, in the faces, of Lucas, the kids, and townsfolk. Cinematographer Charlotte Bruus Christensen allows the lush landscape of the Danish countryside to lull the viewer into a sense of peace, in contrast with the turmoil just under the surface, ready to jump out like a demon in a horror film. But these are real life nightmares, not the product of a genre writer's imagination, which chill to the bone. Hollywood could never touch this subject and have anywhere near the impact. Backed independently by Swedish and Danish production companies, director Vinterberg actually intended to set and shoot the picture in Canada but better tax incentives and financing led him back to his native country of Denmark. It doesn't matter, though. This is the kind of isolated little village that can be found anywhere in the world. "The Hunt" was easily the saddest film I've seen all year but in a cathartic way that only a great work of art can accomplish. It's a gritty and hard-hitting statement on our judgmental society that pulls no punches in its recounting of a controversial ripped-from-the-headlines story, repeated all too often in recent history, that's both poignant and polarizing in its authenticity. It was difficult for me to hold back tears during the screening. I broke down several times. Many will be touched by certain scenes more than others, but "The Hunt" is one of the most affecting and emotional films I've ever seen and one of the best of 2012.
